• La Seguiriya at Alhama de Granada
    July 2008

Spain is beautiful and diverse – how can you decide which places to visit? Dave read a guide book on Andalucia and decided Alhama was the place – it looked like a small traditional town, built along a fantastic gorge, set in lovely countryside. It had everything we wanted, so the decision was made.

We investigated where to stay, and found a small hotel called La Seguiriya. With a name like that, we had to stay there! It is owned by a cantaor, Paco Moyano, who although doesn’t sing professionally now is still involved in the flamenco world. While we were there he was invited to a flamenco event in Cordoba. He cooks a delicious breakfast while singing along to his favourite flamenco CDs – usually Ramon Montoya!

Each room is named after a different flamenco song form, and we stayed in La Debla. It’s an 18th century building right on the gorge and is beautifully refurbished. One of Paco’s daughters is an artist and her wonderful paintings adorn the walls. The patio has an amazing view, and Paco welcomes guitarists practising on it!

On our first evening we went out to explore the local bars and found the local youth on a bar crawl on horseback – much more environmentally friendly that cruising round on mopeds. The town also has natural hot springs right next to the river, where people go to bathe. At 1a.m. it is deserted, so it’s like having your own person thermal springs!
